The mission of the St. Joseph Religious Education Program is to work with parents and students in kindergarten through eighth grades to develop a greater understanding of the teachings of Jesus and how to live the life of a Catholic Christian.
The Religious Education Program at St. Joseph Parish exists to aid the parents, who are the primary educators, in preparing their children to become life-long practicing members of the Catholic Church "Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child's earliest years. This happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a Christian life in keeping with the Gospel. Family catechesis precedes, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. The Parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents." (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2226)
While recognizing that catechesis is a lifelong process, its purpose is to make a person's "faith become living, conscious, and active, through the light of instruction". (Christus Dominus #14) The Religious Education Program of St. Joseph Parish aspires to this goal under the guidelines of the Diocese of Harrisburg and the St. Joseph Pastoral Council.
Catechists in the Religious Education Program are volunteers from our parish. These catechists have criminal and child abuse clearances and are willing to share their faith and religious knowledge with our children. Catechists need everyone’s prayers, cooperation, and respect.
If your family or your child has special needs in order to experience religious education with greater ease, please note it on the registration form or notify the CRE immediately so the catechists can be made aware of the special needs and appropriate measures to be taken.
